Mar 11, 2006 · Naturally the face mills need a shank but as far as function goes they seem to be the same. Milling with a 3" or 4" diameter carbide end mill secured by an R8 collet seems to blur the description of what an end mill is versus a face mill. Just for the record when I need to face I dig out a face mill simply because it covers more ground quicker.
